Frequently asked questions
How is eFG% different from regular field goal percentage?
Regular field goal percentage counts a made two and a made three as equally valuable. Effective field goal percentage adjusts for the fact that a three-pointer is worth 50% more, so shooters who convert threes at a good clip get credit for the extra value instead of looking equivalent to a mid-range-only scorer.
What's a good eFG%?
League-average eFG% in the modern NBA typically sits in the low-to-mid 50s (percent). Elite, efficient shooters — especially those who take a lot of threes and shots at the rim — often post marks in the high 50s or above.
Does eFG% include free throws?
No — eFG% only covers field goal attempts. True shooting percentage (TS%) is the related stat that folds free throws in as well; use that if you want a fuller picture of scoring efficiency.
Why is three-pointers made weighted by 0.5 instead of counted directly?
The 0.5 factor reflects that a three is worth 1.5x a two, not 2x — so each made three effectively adds half an extra made shot on top of counting as one make, which is what the +0.5 × 3PM term captures in the numerator.
