Score Differential Calculator

Convert one round's score into a course-independent Score Differential — the building block behind Handicap Index.

Informational only — not a substitute for official league statistics or professional judgment.

How it's calculated

Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − PCC) Result is rounded to one decimal place. Example: Adjusted Gross Score 89, Course Rating 71.2, Slope Rating 125, PCC 0 Score Differential = (113 ÷ 125) × (89 − 71.2 − 0) = 0.904 × 17.8 ≈ 16.1

Assumptions

  • Adjusted Gross Score must already reflect the WHS net double bogey maximum per hole — this tool doesn't calculate that cap from individual hole scores.
  • PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation) defaults to 0 if left blank, which is correct for the vast majority of rounds.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between my actual score and my Adjusted Gross Score?

Adjusted Gross Score (AGS) applies the WHS "net double bogey" maximum to any hole where you scored much higher than expected — it caps each hole at par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive there. This tool doesn't compute that cap for you; enter your score after you've already applied it.

What is PCC and do I need to enter it?

PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation) is a small daily adjustment (typically -1 to +3) some handicap systems apply when weather or course conditions made scoring unusually hard or easy for the whole field that day. Most golfers can leave it at 0 — it's only published by some regional golf associations.

Why does the formula use 113?

113 is the Slope Rating of a golf course of standard/average difficulty under the WHS. Dividing by your course's actual Slope Rating scales your score up or down relative to that baseline, which is what makes Score Differential comparable across courses of different difficulty.

What do I do with my Score Differential once I have it?

A single differential isn't your Handicap Index — WHS uses your best differentials from up to your most recent 20 rounds, averaged and adjusted with a published table, then multiplied by 0.96. Use our Handicap Index Calculator to combine multiple rounds' differentials into your actual Handicap Index.
