Scoring Average Calculator

Calculate scoring average — total strokes divided by rounds played.

Informational only — not a substitute for official league statistics or professional judgment.

How it's calculated

Scoring Average = Total Strokes ÷ Rounds Played Example: 358 strokes across 5 rounds Scoring Average = 358 ÷ 5 = 71.60

Assumptions

  • Uses gross strokes (no handicap adjustment) across whatever set of rounds you total up — be consistent about which rounds you include so the average stays comparable over time.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a stroke for scoring average?

Every stroke taken during a round, including penalty strokes — the same gross score you'd write on a scorecard, before any handicap is applied. Add up your gross scores across all the rounds you want to include, then enter that total.

What's a good scoring average?

It depends entirely on the course and tees played, so there's no single universal target — PGA TOUR pros average in the low-to-mid 70s across tournament-length courses, while most recreational golfers average well into the 90s or 100s on a full-length course.

How is this different from Handicap Index?

Scoring average is a simple, unadjusted mean of your gross scores. Handicap Index adjusts for course difficulty (Slope and Course Rating) and specifically weights your better rounds rather than averaging everything — the two numbers measure related but different things.

Should I include practice rounds or only competitive rounds?

That's up to what you're trying to measure — the PGA TOUR only counts official tournament rounds in its published scoring average. For your own tracking, be consistent about which rounds you include so the number stays comparable over time.
